World Population Reaches 7.58 Billion

Today is World Population Day and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are now 7.58 billion people on the planet. The world’s population has increased by more than 50% since 1987, when the total reached five billion. However, the Census Bureau says that annual population growth will dip below 1% in 2020-2021, the first time that’s happened since 1950.

From 10,000 BC through the early 1800s, the world’s population remained 1 billion, then began a rapid rise around the start of the 20th century.
