Real Average Hourly Earnings Decreased 2.6 Percent from April 2021 to April 2022

Real average hourly earnings — that is, earnings that have been adjusted for changes in consumer prices — decreased 2.6% from April 2021 to April 2022. The change in real average hourly earnings combined with a 0.9-percent decrease in the average workweek resulted in a 3.4% decrease in real average weekly earnings over this period.

April 2022 is the thirteenth consecutive month of over-the-year decreases in real average hourly earnings; the last increase was 1.7% for the year ended March 2021.
