Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 2,537,000 over the year ended September 2018, a gain of 1.7%. Employment in professional and business services increased by 560,000, or 2.7%, over the year.
Employment in health care and social assistance increased 406,000, a gain of 2.1%. Within health care and social assistance, employment in health care increased 301,500 over the past 12 months.
Construction employment added 315,000 jobs, which was a 4.5% increase.
Over the year, manufacturing added 278,000 jobs, an increase of 2.2%, with about four-fifths of the gain in durable goods manufacturing.
Employment in transportation and warehousing increased by 174,000, or 3.3%, over the past 12 months.
Mining and logging employment rose by 61,000, with all of the gain in mining. Employment in mining and logging increased 8.8% over the September 2017–September 2018 period, which was the largest percentage change among the major industries.
