E-commerce Sales Increase 2.4 Percent in 1Q 2022

The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2022, adjusted for seasonal variation, but not for price changes, was $250.0 billion, an increase of 2.4% (±0.7%) from the fourth quarter of 2021. Total retail sales for the first quarter of 2022 were estimated at $1,747.3 billion, an increase of 3.7% (±0.2%) from the fourth quarter of 2021. The first quarter 2022 e-commerce estimate increased 6.6% (±1.1%) from the first quarter of 2021 while total retail sales increased 10.9% (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2022 accounted for 14.3% of total sales.

On a not adjusted basis, the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2022 totaled $231.4 billion, a decrease of 17.8% (±0.7%) from the fourth quarter of 2021. The first quarter 2022 e-commerce estimate increased 6.7% (±1.1%) from the first quarter of 2021 while total retail sales increased 10.5% (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2022 accounted for 14.3% of total sales.
