Consumer Prices up 4.9 Percent from April 2022 to April 2023

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 4.9% from April 2022 to April 2023, the smallest 12-month increase since April 2021. Consumer prices for food rose 7.7%  for the year ended April 2023, while consumer prices for energy fell 5.1%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, consumer prices for all items less food and energy increased 5.5%. Within all items less food and energy, shelter prices rose 8.1%, following an increase of 8.2% for the year ended March 2023.

Within shelter, consumer prices increased for rent of primary residence (8.8%), lodging away from home (3.3%), owners’ equivalent rent of residences (8.1%), and tenants’ and household insurance (1.4%) for the year ended April 2023.
