Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 164,000 in April 2018, compared with an average monthly gain of 191,000 over the prior 12 months. Job gains in April occurred in professional and business services, manufacturing, education and health services, and mining. Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 4 cents in April, to $26.84. Over the year, average hourly earnings have increased by 67 cents, or 2.6 percent.
In April, employment in professional and business services increased by 54,000. Employment in manufacturing increased by 24,000.
Health care added 24,000 jobs in April. Employment rose in ambulatory health care services (+17,000) and hospitals (+8,000). Employment in mining increased by 8,000, with most of the gain occurring in support activities for mining (+7,000).
