Trucks Transported 60.8% of U.S.-NAFTA Trade in May 2013

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation today released May North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) freight numbers showing that trucks carried 60.8 percent of the $98.6 billion of freight moved in May 2013 between the United States and its NAFTA partners, Canada and Mexico. Trucks were followed by rail at 15.1 percent, vessels at 8.6 percent, pipelines at 6.8 percent and air at 3.9 percent. The surface transportation modes of truck, rail and pipeline carried 82.7 percent of the total NAFTA freight flows (Figure 3).

ACA Employer Shared Responsibility Penalty Delayed

On Tuesday, July 2, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced it would delay the employer shared responsibility penalty (a.k.a. “pay or play” penalty) contained in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA or ACA) until January 1, 2015. This ACA initiative requires large employers (with 50 or more full time employees plus full-time equivalents) to either offer minimum essential and affordable coverage or pay a penalty. Originally, this aspect of the law was scheduled to take effect January 1, 2014.

Remembering Tom Anderson, Trinity Trailer Sales

A dear man, Tom Anderson, left our lives July 13, 2013 and he will be truly missed. He was a generous, fun loving man, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend that lived life to its fullest from coaching baseball, whitewater rafting down the Taos Box to running the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. He never knew a stranger and if he had lived in the 'old day's' he would have been the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Tribal Storyteller, for he was ever available with a story on just about any subject you could think of. Though he dearly loved his family and friends, he also had a passion for the company he built Trinity Trailer Sales and Service, Dallas, Texas and much to his delight was still actively involved in its operation to the end. Tom spent his leisure golfing, boating, and supporting his teams, University of Oklahoma Football and Texas Rangers Baseball.

BTS Releases Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI); Freight Shipments Rose 1.2% in May from April

The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 1.2 percent in May from April, rising after a one month decline, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) released today. The May 2013 index level (114.3) was 20.6 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).
