U.S.-NAFTA Freight Totaled $86.7 Billion in December 2015; Crude Oil Pricing Blamed for Declines

The value of U.S.-NAFTA freight totaled $86.7 billion in December 2015 as all modes of transportation – air, vessel, pipeline, rail, and trucks – carried a lower total value of freight than a year earlier, according to the TransBorder Freight Data released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) (Figure 1, Table 1). Large decreases in the value of commodities moved by pipeline and vessel in December were due to the reduced unit price of crude oil. Year-over-year, the value of U.S.-NAFTA freight flows by all modes declined by 9.5%.

Trailer Converter Dollies No Longer ‘Parts and Accessories’ for FET Purposes

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will no longer classify trailer converter dollies as “parts and accessories” but will rather place them in the “truck trailer chassis” category. This change, of course, has Federal Excise Tax (FET) implications for dolly manufacturers and dealers, as well as the transportation companies that purchase them for use in their businesses.
