Wabash National Supports Salvation Army's Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

When Hurricane Sandy struck the east coast a few weeks ago, Wabash National Corporation (NYSE: WNC) immediately reached out to numerous agencies to extend a helping hand. Salvation Army of Staten Island, NY, facing an overwhelming amount of donated items from around the country with limited facilities to store goods, responded to the offer. Wabash Composites, a business unit of Wabash National, came to the rescue, sending six DuraPlate® portable storage containers to the Staten Island location, which are now full of donated items including water, cleaning supplies and clothing.

September 2012 Surface Trade with Canada and Mexico Fell 0.1 Percent From September 2011

Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico, was 0.1 percent lower in September 2012 than in September 2011, totaling $77.7 billion, unadjusted for inflation, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. This is the first year over year decrease since November 2009. Adjusted for inflation and exchange rates, the September 2012 total was $56.3 billion in 2004 dollars, up 1.4 percent from September 2011.

East® Improves Optional Integrated Stairway for Flatbed Trailers

Securing a flatbed load often requires climbing up on — and down from — the deck of the trailer. That’s not easy, and can even be potentially dangerous. To provide a simpler, easier and safer entrance to and exit from the flatbed deck, East Manufacturing first introduced an optional integrated stairway a few years ago. Now East has improved this option by adding a locking door enclosure that allows for additional lights and license plate mounting, while giving the rear end a more custom appearance.

BTS Releases Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI); Freight Shipments Rose 0.2% in September from August

The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 0.2 percent in September from August, rising after a one-month decline, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) released today. The September 2012 index level (109.2) was 15.8% above the April 2009 low during the recession.

Air Ramp Technology Popular at Felling Trailers

Felling Trailers’ air ramp technology has increased in popularity among several of its trailer models for a couple of reasons. To start, Felling air ramps operate via an air bag system that works off of the same supply as the air brake system. Thus, any air-brake equipped truck can operate a Felling Trailer equipped with air ramps without any other external power source (e.g. battery, gas engine or truck powered hydraulic system). Additionally, air ramps have lower maintenance costs over time and also eliminate the possibility of environmental cleanup issues associated with hydraulic ramp leaks.
