FTR Reports Final Net Trailer Orders for December at 34,000 Units

FTR reported final December net trailer orders at 34,000 units, down 5% from last December but up 35% compared to 2015 for the year. Orders were robust for the second straight month and exceeded expectations. December trailer orders were led by good dry van activity and very strong refrigerated van numbers. Most vocational trailer segments showed a healthy increase as well. Trailer orders totaled 219,000 units in 2016. Backlogs rose significantly again and are now at the highest point since June. Production fell due to the holidays but was much better than expected.

NHTSA Issues NPRM on Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to establish a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS), No. 150, to mandate vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications for new light vehicles and to standardize the message and format of V2V transmissions.

U.S.-NAFTA Freight Shipments Increased 3.3 Percent in November 2016

U.S.-NAFTA freight totaled $91.1 billion in current dollars as all five major transportation modes carried more freight by value with North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico in November 2016 compared to November 2015, according to the TransBorder Freight Data released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
